Abstract
Hard disk drive (HDD) is one of the most attractive information storage device. JSME IIP division proposed academic roadmap on HDD in order to derive research items for HDD performance continues improvement. Technology examples in the roadmap are expected to be a help for new technologies sprouting, therefore this paper shows 5 examples on head positioning technology. “Micro actuator” is an example of “Collocated actuator” for large bandwidth. “Application of multi-objective optimization” is an example of “Controller tuning based on experimental data” for large bandwidth. “Adaptive feed forward cancelation using variable gain” and “Determination of track seeking end” are examples of “Controller tuning based on experimental data” for low energy consumption. “Short span seek for 2.5 inch HDD for enterprise” is an example of “Seek trajectory” for low energy consumption. Some technologies showed epoch-making performance improvement, and some showed several tens percent effect. Authors expect that this academic roadmap helps future development of HDDs.
