Abstract

Follow-up studies were conducted on 100 ears in which the ossicles had been reconstructed with hydroxyapatite ossicular prosthesis. At one year 72% of the ears and at three years 71% satisfied at least one of the following criteria of success: 1) air conduction (AC) hearing level better than 40dB, 2) AC hearing gain more than 15dB, 3) air-bone gap closed to less than 20dB. At one year 67% and at three years 69% of the ears satisfied the third criterion. With an otoendoscopic videocamera the ear drum findings were recorded for evaluation of the surgical results. Problems such as extrusion of the ossicles (7ears), exposure (1ear) and extraction due to recurrent infection (2ears) were seen in 10 ears (10%). These problems could be attributed to recurrent inflammation and/or tubal dysfunction. Hearing test results as well as ear drum findings were satisfactory in 54ears (54%). Discrepancies between hearing test results and ear drum findings were noted in ears with lateralized ear drum, retraction pocket, dislocated columella or fixed stapes.
