Abstract

This survey with biotelemetry system was conducted to observe swimming behavior of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta. Two experiments were conducted off the coast of Abashiri and Cape Notoro, Hokkaido, early in September 1984. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The direction and speed of horizontal swimming differed between the experiments, i.e. experimental fish moved to SE-S with average speed of 0.52m/sec (0.76 FL/sec) and westward with average speed of 0.70m/sec (0.96 FL/sec). 2) The average swimming depths were 58.8m and 55.0m respectively. 3) Regarding the vertical movement, rising and diving speed of each experiment showed no notable difference. 4) Horizontal swimming was remarkably faster than vertical moving.
