Abstract

The figure of J. Łobodowski is extremely important for Polish- Ukrainian history, especially in modern times. The whole life and creative path of the writer was connected with Ukraine. This is evidenced by the pages of his biography, as evidenced by journalistic and literary works. Ukraine was spiritually close to him, he intensively worked on many topics related to it. Łobodowski is called a spokesman for the Polish-Ukrainian dialogue, a herald of an idea that still remains relevant given the current problems and threats. The writer’s work is extremely versatile and extraordinary. His poetry collections „Zolota Hramota” and „Song of Ukraine” are dedicated to Ukraine. He was a well-known author of prose works, his trilogy “Reeds” is dedicated to the Ukrainian Cossacks, and the tetralogy “History of Joseph Zakrevsky” tells about Lublin and the land of Lublin, Volyn of the interwar period, as well as Ukraine in the 20-30s of XX century. Historians of Polish and Ukrainian literature count Józef Łobodowski among the successors of the traditions of the “Ukrainian school” or the Polish-Ukrainian border. The public and publicist activity of the artist falls on a difficult historical period, when in the mass consciousness of the majority of representatives of both societies there was mutual hostility and mistrust. In Łobodowski’s poetry, Ukraine acquires the features of a kind of steppe Greece - the dream of Arcadia. The artist made a significant contribution to the formation of the image of Ukraine in Polish literature, and thus in the world. The concept of Scythian Ukraine-Greece as the heiress of the Hellenic world, has been woven organically into the European cultural tradition.
