Abstract
A new cooling control system to improve scale removability from wire rod after a heat treatment such as spheroidizing annealing has been developed. This system remarkably reduces a pickling treatment necessary for scale removal and enables an efficient mechanical descaling by shot blasting. This improved scale removal treatment consists of two (2) parts, the scale composition adjustment process in which wire rod is maintained in atmospheric air for a specified time after the furnace process, and the prevention process of adjusted scale composition transformation which is performed by fast cooling.By this treatment, (1) Wire rod with mill scale can be treated without pre-pickling with the same treatment efficiency level as pre-pickled material.(2) Pre-pickled material and drawn wire are treated by 1/2∼1/3 pickling time compared to conventional slow cooling of wire rod. When scale on wire rod is removed using a shot blast, this treatment enables scale removal with 1/2∼1/3 of shot density, resulting in a reduction of required power and shot consumption.Combination of this efficient shot blasting with the foundation treatment for wire drawing using water-soluble lubricant, it enables high efficient non-pickling and non-zinc phosphate treated wire drawing which is free from hydrogen embrittlement and delayed fracture by phosphorus.
