Abstract

To establish a clean area in the Tsubonuma district, Sendai City, where fascioliasis was enzootic, steps were enforced for 3 years beginning with 1978. They consisted of periodical administration with an anthelmintic, inhibition of use of fresh rice straw, and prohibition of use of fresh bovine feces as manure for paddy field. The Fasciola-positive rate, as determined by Taira's technique, was 48.5% before these steps were taken. It decreased to 20.4, 17.3, and 13.5% 2, 2.5, and 3 years after the application of these steps, when an EPG of 6 or more was noticed in 1, 0, and 1 animal, respectively. Taira's technique of quantitative determination of Fasciola eggs seemed to make it possible to clarify the actual enzootic condition of fascioliasis more clearly than before.
