Abstract

A 19-year-old below-knee male amputee using the Patellar-Tendon Bearing prosthesis was suffering from the skin erosion of his stump. We prescribed the Total Surface Bearing prosthesis in order to reduce the pressure to the skin and the up-down movement of his stump. After receiving an optimal fit of the socket, he made a quick recovery from the skin lesion. We concluded that the Total Surface Bearing prosthesis is more appropriate for below-knee amputees with skin problems of the stump than the PTB prosthesis.
