Abstract

Plasma carburization, one of techniques, has been widely utilized to improve wear resistance of structural steels. In this study, the effect of plasma carburization on properties of TiAl was investigated. Specimens cut from cast ingot with composition of Ti-33.5Al-1Nb-0.5Cr-0.5Si (mass%) were carburized for 3.6ks at 1173K in C3H8/Ar mixture gas atmosphere with pressure of 107Pa by a plasma carburization furnace. Ti2AlC carbide layer about 3μm in thickness was formed on the TiAl by the carburizing. This layer showed higher hardness than bearing steel AISI 52100 with Vickers hardness of 836HV1. The carbide layer did not show harmful effect on room temperature tensile and rotating bending fatigue properties of TiAl. As a result of pin-on-disk wear test, the wear resistance of the carburized TiAl was extremely improved as compared with bare TiAl. It is concluded that plasma carburization is a promising technique for TiAl.
