Abstract

Estimation of tsunami celerity, flow velocity and discharge induced by the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami is conducted using observed water level data. The tsunami celerity in river is estimated by analyzing water level data. An estimation method based on the conservation equation is used to calculate the flow velocity and discharge. The accuracy and availability of this method are verified by a numerical experiment. Based on the verification result, the estimation method applies real observation data to obtain the velocity and discharge induced by the tsunami wave. The estimated river discharge is compared with design flood discharge to assess the tsunami impact in the river. Furthermore, the present estimation method can be used effectively to obtain the tsunami physical parameters in many real fields.
