Abstract

Two biomass utilization scenarios in a suburban agricultural area were evaluated from the points of energy, profitability and greenhouse gas emission. One scenario was energy crop cultivation for ethanol production at idle paddy field which was compared to preservation of the field. The other was methane fermentation to generate electricity and liquid fertilizer which was compared to composting of livestock manure. The biomass use system was divided into stages of production, transportation, conversion and utilization of energy and materials originated from biomass. This evaluation methodology could clarify the effects of the scenarios and remarks.
