Abstract

Thirty-four patients with tinnitus were given 300 mg of mexiletine orally three times a day for one or two weeks after being tested for the effects of intravenous lidocaine (40-60 mg). Excellent relief (more than 80% disappearance of tinnitus by subjective evaluation) was observed in 1 patient, good relief (50-80% disappearance) in 4 (12%), partial relief (20-50% disappearance) in 7 (20%), and no relief in 22 (65%). The effect of mexiletine correlated with that of lidocaine. The patients whose serum levels of mexiletine were greater than 0.7μg/mg, tended to show good relief of tinnitus. It was considered that the effect of mexiletinc would increase if high serum levels could be maintained within safe levels.
