Abstract

The traditional forms of Japanese houses are wooden structures, one of which is Machiya houses in the Kyoto urban area, that had been peculiarly developed in the sites with characteristic shape. However this style of house has been disappearing in modern times due to the vulnerability of wooden structures against such disasters as earthquake and fire. This new housing project proposes a disaster-preventive wooden house of a hybrid structural system, using modern and indigenous materials and equipment with visco-elastic dampers. Evidence also suggests that connection with neighboring traditional houses by visco-elastic dampers can be effective in preventing serious earthquake damage.
