Abstract

Surface modification of magnetic ultrafine particles is very important and applicable for high technology. In present paper, coupling agents, which were VTES (vinyltriethoxysilane), OTES (octadecyltriethoxysilane) and PTST (i-propyltristearoyltitanate), were used as surface modifying agents. Each agent had surface modifying ability. In case of PTST, the modified surface showed very high hydrophobicity and stability. The characterization of the modified surface with PTST was studied by contact angle measurement with several liquids. The surface free energy was calculated to be about 23-25 mJ/m2. Therefore, it is possible that CH3- in stearoyl group of PTST largely contributes to the strong hydrophobicity.
