Abstract

Aluminum nitride blocks were prepared by the usual method of powder metallurgy. The raw material is of ultrafine aluminum particles prepared by arc-prasma processing. The particles were pressed in a steel die, followed by two-step sintering (873K and 1473K) in flowing nitrogen under null pressure. The nitriding reaction of aluminum is exothermic, thus, it progresses by self-propagating high temperature synthesis when it has once begun. The structures and the composition of the AlN blocks were examined by SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The pysical property such as density was measured.
