Abstract

Several countermeasures have been proposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Korea tried to prevent the spread of infectious diseases with social regulations, but the number of confirmed infections have been rapidly increasing on the ‘With Corona’. Therefore, a methods to prevent the spread of infectious diseases for the space have been required. Representatively, there is ultraviolet (UV) disinfection known to be effective for sterilization of microorganisms. UV disinfection can sterilize with a very short time of irradiation, but there is a limit to its use because it can have a harmful effect when irradiated to the human. In this study, the effect of reducing infectious bacteria according to ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) application on the under floor air distribution (UFAD) system which mainly applied to office buildings was analyzed by CFD. The UFAD is a system that supply air from the floor to the office space through the fan terminal unit (FTU). UVGI was arranged near the floor outlet and the difference arrangement (vertical and horizontal) were compared. As a result, the method of arranging the UVGI horizontally was more effective than the vertical arranging. The infection risk reduction using the Wells-Riley model was also decreased by 80.4 % (Zone 1), 84.8 % (Zone 2), 85.8 % (Zone 3), 67.2 % (Zone 4) when UVGI was installed. The application of UVGI to the UFAD is considered to be an effective methods of preventing the spread of infectious diseases in the office space where workers spend most of day.
