Located on a small (30S) subparticle, protein S1 is not just the largest protein of the Escherichia coli ribosome, but it has an unusual structure [1]. This includes the discovery of its paradoxical ability to displace RNA from the replicase complex and determining the crystal structure of its fragment capable of performing this function.
