Abstract

Korean mathematics curriculum has undergone multiple cycles of reforms. Recent reforms emphasize teachers' role as who enact the written curriculum to their students. Teachers' guide is one of the resources that support teachers with enacting a given curriculum. Therefore, the potential teachers' guide has as a space for teacher professional development is worth an in-depth examination. To this end, this study explored the potential of Korean mathematics teachers' guides as educative curriculum materials. Nine guides for first year high school students were examined based on the coding scheme derived from literature. In addition, qualitative approach was applied to identify exemplary cases that contribute to increasing educativeness of teachers' guides. The examination revealed that the guides support assessment the most while providing limited guides for classroom instruction. The study provides various examples from the nine guides to enhance the quality of teachers' guides. The study ends with suggestions for teacher educators, curriculum writers, and researchers.
