Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how CMCA and empathy influenced on English reading comprehension through the mediated effects of self-directed learning ability and instructor credibility. A small-scale online survey about student characteristics was carried out. Data were collected from 76 college students and 65 students’ responses were analyzed. CMCA showed a direct effect on self-directed learning ability and empathy showed a direct effect on instructor credibility. Self-directed learning ability significantly affected on English reading comprehension. Lastly, the effect of CMCA through the mediated effects of self-directed learning ability and instructor credibility was significantly effective. The results of the study suggested that researchers can take advantage of using teaching strategies to help students decrease CMCA and develop self-directed learning ability to improve English reading comprehension in online English classes.
