Abstract

Policy and Direction: The First Year written by James F. Schnabel, was compiled with active support from the U.S. government and the military. This book although succeeded in finding military lessons and providing a realistic basis for U.S. military action in Korea, it only emphasized the purpose of the compilation advocated by the U.S. government and the military, excluding many other questions that should be raised, such as the political nature of the war and relevance with Korean society.
On the other hand The Hidden History of the Korean War, 1950~1951, written by independent journalist Izzy Stone, included descriptions criticizing the way the U.S. intervened in the war and carried out the war. It used the Korean War as a subject of analysis, but the author harshly criticized American politics and diplomacy. It caused great controversy in American society after its publication.
It criticized the cold war consensus in American society, which was established at the time, and was suppressed by the U.S. government and the military. The compilation of the two books symbolized the consequence in which cold war and cold war culture were slowly structured in the United States after the end of World War II.
