Abstract

The article examines the political and legal foundations of the organization and activity of the Soviet repressive system, determines its place and role in the state mechanism of the Soviet state. The features of the interaction of the bodies protecting the revolutionary (socialist) legality at various stages of the formation of the Soviet state are considered. The mechanism of execution of punishments is analyzed, with emphasis on its functional orientation combining punitive and educational effects on convicts, divided into politically loyal to the new government (‘stumbled’) and class alien elements (‘enemies of the people’).
