Abstract

The TV debates for the 19th South Korean Presidential election were conducted in various formats; Time-limited Debate, Initiativecontrolled Debate, 1:1 Policy Debate, Standing Debate, Round-table Debate, Presentation, etc. Though TV debates are known to reinforce the conformation bias of electors, the last debates caused the approval ratings of candidates to fluctuate. The aim of this study is to examine each of the debate formats that were conducted on the last Presidential Debate. Newspaper articles were chosen for their subject of analysis, since the reproduction of articles are as important as the debate itself. This study mainly focuses on evaluating the debate formats. Comparative analysis between news organizations has also been conducted. The 19th South Korean Presidential Election Debate media report coverage published by the National Election Commission, is the main subject of analysis. 366 news reports of major press media, from April to May, 2017 were also analyzed. Both quantitative and qualitative measurements were taken. Text mining through R was conducted, and qualitative research has been taken. Debate format, number of debaters, selection of topics, time management, environmental background setup and the role of the host have also been taken into consideration. Improvement points of the debate have been sought, while the importance of the debate on values, not on policies, has been reviewed.
