Abstract
청산도(靑山島)의 입도조(入島祖)들은 피난지와 신개척지를 찾아 주로 17~18세기에 입도하였다. 입도조들은 서남해 해안 지역에서 주로 입도하였으며, 특히 현재의 해남군과 강진군에서 많이 입도하였다. 현재의 완도군 관내에서 입도조들이 거친 경유지로는 완도 체도, 고금도, 소안도 등이 있다. 입도조들의 최초 거주지는 바람을 막아주고 득수(得水)할 수 있는 산록완사면에 인접한 계곡에 주로 정착하였다. 이러한 위치는 조망과 피신을 동시에 할 수 있으며, 가족을 부양하기 위한 농지의 개간에도 유리한 곳이다. 입도 이후 인구증가에 따라 물을 얻을 수 있는 범위에서 마을과 경지가 공간적으로 확대되었다. 마을은 대체로 높은 곳에서 낮은 곳으로 이동하거나 확대되며 구들장논을 포함한 경지 또한 같은 양상이 나타났다. 그리고 인구압이 특별히 심할 경우에는 심지어 산정 부근까지 경지의 범위가 확대되는 현상이 나타났다.
