Abstract

The study analyzed the current conditions of Japanese education in the Kyungnam area, based on surveys. The results are as follows: first, an interest in Japanese public culture has dropped. This situation may be affected by the entrance examination. It appears that the reduced interest in Japanese, with institutionalization and professional maniatic changes, is not irrelevant. Second, in the 2009 education course, Japanese is not considered as an important subject, and is included in the student activity fields, What is more, Japanese is considered as a subject that can be substituted by self study, because it has very little to do with the college scholastic ability test. Third, the image of Japan has changed from that of an advanced country, economic power, and powerful nation to that of an average nation. The image of a refreshing economical role model does not hold anymore. Fourth, the Koreans do not view Japanese as a language worth learning, but instead now learn Chinese. In order to combat this situation, people have to understand the present environment and create new class systems that can cope with these changes.
