Abstract

In a previous study, we reported the calclfication-promoting effect of T3 in the growth plate of HEBP induced-rickets rats. It was also suggested that this effect resulted from stimulating the maturation and growth of hypertrophic cells in the growth plate. In the present study, we investigated the value of serum ALP, Ca, and Pi in the same experimental design. The value of ALP was significantly increased by T3 treatment, but Ca and Pi were not. Moreover, this increase of ALP correlated well with the thickness and calcification of the hypertrophic cell zone which we had previously demonstrated. In other words, serum ALP is useful as a marker of maturation of the hypertrophic cells in the growth plate.
