The two prosodic doctrines, “not attaching but not detaching” and “not approaching but not departing,” have long been treated as a general poetic theory in Chinese poetics as well as classical Chinese aesthetics. However, they are actually related to the reflection on the theory on the genre of poetry on objects (yongwu shi), a trend prevalent mainly in the Qianlong reign-period (1736-1796) of the Qing Dynasty. These two doctrines were inspired by the poetics on “inner nature and soul” and have a close relationship with the concept of “strikingly relevant” (qie). They were largely enriched and deepened in the specific poetic context of the time.
