Abstract

In may 1997, Japan Paper Association worked out a voluntary control plan on the hazerdrous air pollutants emmitted from pulp and paper manufacturing mills. The hazadrous substances subject to restrictions are formalddehyde, chloroform and benzen, which are planned to be cut by 50%, 20%, 30% respectively within three years. This paper describes the background for voluntary control of hazadrous air pollutants, a sammary of Japan Paper Association's frame work on this voluntary control, the current status of pollutant emissions from pulp mills as well as basic ideas on poullution reduction measures.
