Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between health literacy(HL) and exercise participation by the people with spinal cord injuries, in order to provide basic data for promoting their exercise participation and extension. The subjects of this study were 230 people over age 19 with spinal cord injuries visiting the rehabilitation support center of the Korea Spinal Cord Injruy Association. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between HL and exercise participation. Statistical significance was set at p<.05. The results of the study are as follows. As for the exercise participation and non participation, odds ratio(OR) of exercise participating group with HL on the borderline was 3.170, which was statistically significant relative to the group with inadequate HL. And OR for exercise participating group with adequate HL was 2.347 relative to the group with inadequate HL, which was statistically significant. As for the exercise period, only more than 12 months of participation demonstrated significance in the groups with borderline HL compared to the group with inadequate HL. OR was 3.465 which was statistically significant, relative to the group with inadequate HL. Finally, as for the exercise frequency, more than 3 to 6 per week of participation demonstrated significance in the groups with borderline HL compared to the group with inadeuqate HL. OR was 3.921 which was statistically significant, relative to the group with inadequate HL. The exercise time was not statistically significant.BR Therefore, regular education is needed to improve the understanding of the health–related information of the people with spinal cord injuries and through such initiatievs, it may be possible to increase the length of participation in the exercise as a result of sufficient communication between experts and participants.
