Abstract
Effect of obesity, blood pressure, total cholesterol and fasting blood glucose on aortic arch calcification (abbreviated as calcification) was studied in 495 males and 751 females, aged 65 years or older, living at home in a localized community.Calcification was diagnosed by routine chest film. The proportion of calcification increased with age in both sexes and the proportion was significantly higher in females (27.9%) than in males (21.2%).After adjusting for sex and age, the proportion of hypertension and that of hypergycemia in cases with calcification were significantly higher than in those without calcification.Even when interrelations among multiple factors were adjusted by logistic regression analysis, hyperglycemia was still most significantly related to calcification.
