Abstract

The most important traditional agricultural crop of Cambodia is rice which is cultivated in about 2/3 of arable land and being the main foodstuff of the population along with fish. Since 2004, the steady and substantial growth in rice production observed. It has been possible not only to satisfy domestic needs and solve the food problem, but also to turn Cambodia into its net exporter. Positive trends in the rice industry could not but affect the social sphere, having a noticeable effect to improving the living standards of the population. Rice has begun to be identified with growth and wealth and it turned into a potential “white gold” of the country.
