Abstract

To elucidate the origin of nasal surface basophilic cells, we studied the reactivity of nasal surface basophilic cells to formalin. Two samples were obtained by scraping the mucosal surface of the inferior nasal concha from 20 patients with perennial nasal allergy and 26 patients with non-allergic nasal disorders. One sample was fixed with 99% methylalcohol and the other sample with 10% formalin. In patients with perennial nasal allergy, the mean number of metachromatic cells was 856±670 in samples fixed with alcohol and 56±89 in samples fixed with formaim. In patients with non-allergic nasal disorders, the mean number was 210±282 in samples fixed with alcohol and 15±29 in samples fixed with formalin. The findings suggested that the nasal surface basophilic cells are derived from the mucosal mast cells not only in patients with perennial nasal allergy but also in patients with non-allergic nasal disorders.
