Abstract

Plasma and leukocyte poor red cell concentrates were stored in a new additive solution containing mannitol, citrate, phosphate, adenine and ascorbyl-2-phosphate for 6 weeks. The additive solution, MAAP-2 showed the best results. The 24-hour autologus post-transfusion survival of 51Cr-labeled red cell was 95.1% and 89.3% for 3 and 6 weeks storage, respectively. After 6-week stroage, ATP and 2, 3-DPG levels were 2.96μmole/gHb and 7.47μmol/gHb, respectively. Futhermore, the stored red cell shapes were ratained discoid and hemolysis decreased. This solution enabled to provide an excellent red cell product with a long shelf life and with a normal oxygen affinity.
