Abstract

Suffering has become one of the most important issues in the fields of contemporary theology, philosophy, and ethics. The thought of Emmanuel Levinas is an exemplary scholarship on this subject. His work focuses on the suffering of the Other in our times. Levinas holds the entire tradition of Western philosophy responsible for the effort to reduce other to the same. Levinas’ work is reminiscent of Bonhoeffer; they share a common interest in the suffering of the Other. The two look alike on the outside, but they are different in characteristics. The differences between Levinas and Bonhoeffer come from different points of view on theology, especially, theodicy and the Cross. This paper first focuses on the dialogue between Levinas’ ideas on suffering and Bonhoeffer’s theology based on the cross and concludes with a missiological approach to suffering in today’s world.
