Abstract

The article is devoted to the social culture of the Western European and Russian nobility of the XVII-XVIII centuries viewed through the lenses of military affairs. Refinement, mannerism and decorative effect in the Western European society created ideas of the war distracted from the reality. Under the influence of illusory images, the war was overestimated, its perception as a catastrophe bringing death, suffering, destruction faded. The fanciful gallantry of the Baroque formed a kind of “frivolous” militancy of the Western European society. This feature contrasted sharply with the Russian cultural tradition of the war rejection in all its forms and manifestations.
