Abstract

Chemical composition, oxygen nonstoichiometry and its effect on superconductivity of a single CuO2-layer compound, Bi-Sr-Cu-O were investigated. The critical temperature, Tc, was strongly dependent on cation and oxygen compositions and the optimum cation composition found in this study was around Bi2Sr1.875Cu1. 126Ov. Its oxygen content, y, was examined through chemical titration analysis after quenching the specimens from various temperatures. It was found that the formal valence of Cu was in a range from 2.05 to 2.15 and maximum Tc appeared to exist at around 2.1.
