Abstract

We treated six cases of postoperative infection in the oral and maxillofacial region using gentamicin-impregnated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads (gentamicin-PMMA beads) from 1987 to 1990. Included were two benign tumors, one cyst, and three malignant tumors of the mandible. GM beads were temporarilly implanted into the dead space following debridement and were removed after 10-50 days. All cases were cured in a short time, without any side effects. In three of the four patients in whom the mandible was reconstructed at primary surgery with iliac bone or metal plates, these inplants did not have to be removed.
