Abstract

The article analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Spanish society. The author examines the reasons for the rapid spread of the epidemic in Spain, its impact on the economic and political spheres and on public consciousness. The pandemic has exacerbated long-standing problems associated with the requirements of the modernization of the Spanish society, and in particular the restructuring of the production model and its turning into a more sustainable and effective form capable of withstanding any unfavorable turns in the country’s development. These large-scale tasks can be undertaken due to the strong financial support of the EU. The question is whether the authorities are able to manage the funds rationally. Current situation requires the leftwing coalition government, led by the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, to develop dialogue and expand cooperation with the influential right-wing opposition. Meanwhile, the leading representatives of the right-wing forces – the conservative People’s Party and right radical «Vox» – stand in staunch opposition to the government. The country is disunited, the degree of public tension is high. All these factors foreshadow uneasy times in the world of Spanish politics.
