Abstract
Introduction. The article deals with Buryat versions of the Epic of Jangar. Texts of the Buryat versions and their structural features have remained unstudied to date and are of particular interest within the Buryat oral tradition. Goals. The study aims to delineate and identify similarities and differences between the Buryat and Kalmyk versions of the Jangar. Materials. The paper focuses on variants of Buryat epic narratives about Jangar recorded by D. Dugarov in 1964 in Dzhidinsky District, and A.N. Stepanov in 1941 in Selenginsky District of Buryatia. The latter texts are compared to an uliger titled ‘Bogdo Zhangar Tuukhe’ and recorded from ethnic Buryats of Mongolia in 1927. Results. The work reveals that the Dzhida and Selenga versions have quite a number of common features with the second song of the Kalmyk Jangar — The Marriage of Baatar Khongor — while the former contain some certain distinguishing aspects, e.g., a differing plot element and a few characters. The Buryat versions of the Jangar have not only preserved their original basis but also been somewhat influenced by the Khori uliger tradition (especially the Selenga one), which undoubtedly requires further research.
