Abstract

The article analyzes the historical songs that deal with the Northern War of 1700-21. It emphasizes that, even though the songs seem to rely on historical data, they tend to merge with the previous tradition. Historical songs as a folk genre give a clear understanding of how old and new toponyms denoting the same locus (Russia and Rus; the Baltic Sea and the Varangian (Verey) Sea; Kolyvan and Revel; Yuryev and Dorpat) manage to coexist within the same creative space.
