Abstract

Background and Objectives: To propose the further research direction on optimal user-oriented AAC systems for non-verbal children, this research evaluates the usability of a convenient AAC system, MyTalkie, and especially focuses on its user interface. Method: 47 special education experts participated in the research. They have experience in teaching non-verbal children with disorders Research materials were collected and analyzed through an evaluation process, which contained an individual evaluation with a checklist rating, as well as a group discussion among experts. Results: The total average score of the usability tests was 4.06. The suitability of developing the AAC system had the highest score, while the scores on the technical characteristics of the system was relatively low. Group discussion revealed that an optimal user-oriented AAC system should support an easy and transparent way to access its information, should be suitable and consistent in very different real-use conditions, should follow standards on AAC, and should preserve errors. Conclusion: The usability test for the AAC system should be conducted gradually and repetitively, not only in the initial stage of development, but during all development stages.
