Abstract

Purpose: This study is one of Kuma Kengo’s methods of expressing locality, and its main purpose is to examine the interpretation of a specific area and how the expression appears, focusing on the Jeju Ball built in Jeju, Korea. Method: The characteristics of locality expression were derived through comparison with existing buildings in Jeju and Kuma Kengo’s particleization theory such as grids, checks, and holes. Through this, it was analyzed focusing on how Jeju’s regional characteristics as an overseas architect are embodied through the Jeju Ball or how regional expressions and interpretations of the Jeju region are made from view of point of outsider. The concept of locality used in this study means that it is used in the same meaning as the regional characteristics of a specific region, and the theoretical definition or concept of locality and Kuma Kengo’s architectural philosophy are applied to the minimum range. Result: This study mainly examined the regional expression methods and characteristics of Jeju Ball, but to grasp the more in-depth regional expression method and characteristics of Kuma Kengo, various in-depth studies on multiple cases by period or region are needed. This will be revealed through follow-up studies.
