Abstract

The article is dedicated to relevant problems of the influence of the deepfake technology on the activities of law enforcement authorities. The authors analyze one of the promising areas of application of artificial intelligence in legal psychology: the technology of creation of virtual twins of real people able to imitate their behavior in the virtual space including speech and image on a real-time basis (the deepfake technology). The paper offers the authors' definition of the deepfake concept, reviews the history of origination of the indicated technology and analyzes advantages and shortcomings of the two main deepfake identification means: criminalistic and neural network detectors. The authors conclude that: firstly, there is a possibility that the deepfake technology will be used for illegal purposes, which requires legislative improvements, secondly, one needs to analyze the risks of breakdown of the existing system of evidence based on photo and video records in view of the introduction of the deepfake technology, thirdly, one needs to reflect on the possibility of legal use of the deepfake technology by employees of law enforcement authorities, which requires improvement of the organization and tactics of deepfake application in law enforcement purposes as well as the development of psychological recommendations for the application of deepfake in the activities of law enforcement authorities.
