Abstract

The Economic Complexity Index is based on the diversity and ubiquity of countries’ export baskets. Developed countries, which have a great potential for productive knowledge, export complex products, such as machinery, chemicals, vehicles, etc. However, developing countries with limited capabilities export low-complexity products, such as mining and agricultural products. Over the last 20 years, Armenia has worsened 25 positions in the ECI ranking due to the decline in export diversification. In order to diversify exports and produce complex products, the government must intervene effectively to redistribute resources and direct them to the production of complex products.
