Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of small group cooking activities in order to increase prosocial behavior and peer competence of 5-year-old children. For this study, forty-two 5-year-old children were selected from one kindergarten in Daegu. And 21 were assigned to the experimental group and 21 were assigned to the comparative group randomly. The experimental group participated in a small cooking activity program and the comparative group participated in an individual activity cooking program. Each program consisted of 14 sessions which were 50 minutes per session. Children’s prosocial behavior and peer competence were measured before and after the program was implemented. Data analysis of prosocial behavior and peer competence were conducted with a MANCOVA. The research results are as follows. Frist, there was a significant difference in the prosocial behavior of children between the experimental group that participated in the small group cooking program and the comparative group that participated in the individual activity cooking program. Second, there was a significant difference in the peer competence between the experimental and the comparative group. Based on these results, it has been proven that 5-years-old children are able to improve prosocial behavior and peer competence through the small group cooking program developed in this study. Therefore, it can be helpful for children to improve prosocial behavior and peer competence through cooperation in this small group cooking activity at a preschool educational institution.
