Abstract

Discrete breather (DB) is spatially localized vibrational mode of large amplitude in a defect-free crystal. The role of DB in condensed matter physics and materials science has been inten-sively studied during last decade. In the present brief review we summarize the results on gap DB in two- and three-dimensional crystals. We cover the following issues: proper-ties of DB in crystals at zero temperature; identification of DB at finite temperature; mechanisms of DB formation; possibil-ity to excite DB with frequency lying inside phonon band; effect of DB on crystal properties; etc.<br />
