Abstract
The article examines the way of formation of Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv (1892–1939) as the National Academy of Sciences. Based on the study of the Society’s charter, regulatory documents, works of society members and historiographical sources, the main directions of scientific activity of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Much attention is focused to the formation of a scientific institution, which not only became a leader in the formation of Ukrainian science, but also became a national academy. The article shows the activity of sections (The Historical-Philosophical Section, the Philological Section, the Mathematical, Natural Sciences and Medical Section), commissions (Archeographic, Ethnographic, Statistical, Classic Philology, Linguistic, Archeological, Ethnographic, Art History, Physiographic, Bibliographic and other) and institutes of the society as its main structural elements.
