Abstract

The paper aims to identify specificity of the Crimean Bulgar language functioning at the modern stage. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the authors introduce new data on the problem of the Crimean Bulgar language functioning into scientific use. The following conclusions are justified: firstly, the Bulgarian dialect bearers do not perceive “dialect differences” as a marker for differentiating “natives” and “outsiders”; secondly, regardless of the high level of literary language proficiency, the Crimean Bulgars preserve their mother dialect; thirdly, low language competence of the native Bulgarian speakers is conditioned by a number of factors: deportation, multicultural and multilingual environment, lack of motivation to study the native language and to use it among family members, etc.
