Abstract

The requirements for designing research studies in medicine have increased significantly over the last years. This applies to both dissertations and initiative research studies that are supported by grants from pharmaceutical companies. Prior to submitting a protocol of forthcoming study to the Academic Council or the Grant Committee, it should be designed competently, so that the study findings deserve to be believed. Designing a research study goes through several stages, from formulating a research question to describing the methods that are used to improve the objectivity of the data. Formulating a research question is the key to designing a research study. The research question should meet certain criteria: an answer can be obtained theoretically; an answer to the question will contribute to the science; the investigator has sufficient forces and resources to obtain the answer.
