Abstract

We designed and conducted experiments to convert potential energy stored in a bucket of water positioned at a height of 0.8 m into electrical energy using a home-built hydropower generation setup. We quantitatively compared the amounts of stored energy with the energy obtained. The results of the first experiment showed a surprisingly low energy conversion efficiency, approximately 0.8% using the setup. To increase the efficiency of the conversion, we adopted several shapes for the water wheels and compared the resulting conversion efficiencies. This project will contribute to the understanding of energy conversion and preservation in physics for the research participants.
