Abstract

This article mainly examines how memories of Choi Chi-won were reconstituted and reimagined according to changes of the ruling groups and ruling thoughts. This article is not, however, intended to give a new historical evaluation of Choi Chi-won. In the early Goryeo, Choi Chi-won’s Confucian statecraft was highly valued, and his spirit tablet was enshrined in the Confucius’ Shrine(文廟) along with Seolchong(薛聰). Above of all, his enshrinement could be justified by intentional oblivion of Buddhist or Taoist elements in his studies. Furthermore, in order to legitimize it politically, the connection with Silla was diluted, by emphasizing the fact that he secretly helped the founding of the Goryeo Dynasty[密贊祖業] in the late Silla period and abandoned expectations for Silla and lived in seclusion.<BR> However, as Daoxue(道學)(Neo-Confucianism) was established as a systematic doctrine with the power of Sarim forces(士林) in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, demands to have Choi Chi-won
