Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the insecure attachment of elementary school students upon their interpersonal competence and to analyze the mediating effect of self-acceptance in the relationship between insecure attachment and interpersonal competence, with a view to providing basic data to help understand the characteristics of insecure attachment of elementary school students. Methods For this purpose, 284 elementary school students, who were in their first, second, or third years, were surveyed, and the results were statistically analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0 programs. Results First, the insecure attachment of elementary school students had a significant and negative impact on self-acceptance. Second, the self-acceptance of elementary school students had a significant and positive impact on interpersonal competence. Third, the insecure attachment of elementary school students had a significant and negative impact on interpersonal competence. Fourth, self-acceptance had a significant mediating effect in the relationship between the insecurity of elementary school students and interpersonal competence. Conclusions The findings of this study indicate that, when providing counseling to children who complain about difficulties in interpersonal relationships due to insecure attachment, it is necessary to intervene with regard to the self-acceptance which impacts interpersonal relationship issues directly.
